Adrian, Michigan Adrian College teamed with The Collaborative Inc to design Caine Plaza, an outdoor “living room” that can be enjoyed for the better part of the academic year. The goal of the design was to create an inviting entry to the Student Center (also designed by The Collaborative) that was ADA accessible and doubled as a dynamic central point of gathering for students.
The plaza boasts 4 fire features including a brick-masonry fireplace, two fire pits and a fire bowl suspended in a swirling water fountain; as well as teak-wood furniture.
Two trellises frame gathering spaces on the upper terrace; one focusing on the fireplace and the other on an all-weather flat-screen tv. A mix of indirect lighting, colored accents and traditional ‘gaslight’ fixtures provide comfortable, yet subdued illumination.
With attributes ideal for presentations, cocktail receptions and campus gatherings, Caine Plaza combines the comfort and function of a common room with the freedom of an outdoor environment.
