This new school was built on the site of the existing Old Orchard Elementary, and allowed the old school to stay in operation until the new facility opened.
Toledo, Ohio LEED Silver Certified, the new 47,511 SF, K-5 Old Orchard Elementary is located within a large residential neighborhood. A majority of the 375 students live within walking distance. The School features a two story atrium space entry for students to gather before and after school and for specialized learning. The atrium and half of the classrooms have large panels of glass, allowing students to observe the rain gardens immediately outside.
As a means for embracing the community, the school offers its student dining area, gymnasium, library, art/music rooms and computer lab for after-hours public use. The classroom portions of the building can be locked down for public events.
Old Orchard includes maximized natural daylight, with sensor-controlled lighting systems and daylight to 90% of classrooms; optimized mechanical systems; enhanced refrigerant management; and a cool roof. With most of the classrooms facing south, the new School includes approximately double the natural daylight as its predecessor. On sunny days, a classroom can be fully illuminated without artificial light.
